Two-and-a-half years on from 2021’s acclaimed Seeds Of Love, which drew on Stephen Sedley’s 1967 folk song anthology for the EFDSS, the Otley troubadour Serious Sam Barrett returns with this document of him doing what he does best – performing live with and without his trusty 12-string to a Yorkshire folk club crowd.

One in a grand tradition of Yorkshire clubs, a folk club had existed in Keighley in one form or other since the early 60s, adopting the name Bacca Pipes during the early 70s and playing host to a long line of notables such as Mike Harding, Swan Arcade, Julie Felix, Peter Bellamy, Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy and many more. It was a tradition into which Sam Barrett was born.

“Folk clubs have always been part of my life,” he says. “My parents met in one and I was taken to the clubs and festivals from a young age. The clubs have always been a massive source of inspiration for my music. The magic that happens week in and week out is impossible to put into words. Sometimes the experience is almost transcendental. The old pubs, the reverence for the singers, the jokes, the raffle, the stories and the music. There’s nothing like it.”

This particular performance was recorded at Bacca Pipes’ latest home, the Riddlesden Institute, Riddlesden, Keighley on 6th January 2023 by Sam’s longtime engineer James Atkinson, and comprises a sort of ‘best of’ of his career, with eleven originals, songs like ‘Lullaby Of Leeds’, ‘Long Gone’ and ‘Back On The Jack’ going back a decade or more. These are matched by seven traditional songs (including several from Seeds Of Love) arranged by Sam and inspired by an array of singers from Anne Briggs to George Jones. The warmth of the club’s reception is tangible, as the throng sing along as readily with Sam’s originals as with the familiar traditional songs.

“This club in particular is known for how much the regulars absolutely love to sing along,” he says. “Even if it’s a song you’ve written that afternoon, when you sing it at Bacca Pipes, they’re with you by the second chorus.”

Raised in the Dales village of Addingham, Sam began performing in and around Leeds in 2004, with word spreading further afield with the release of his 2009 debut album Close To Home. Performing at SXSW in Austin, Texas in 2010, he has toured the US widely, usually in the company of friends and fellow skaters The Pine Hill Haints. Along the way, Sam has shared stages with the likes of The Felice Brothers, Lucero, The Legendary Shack Shakers, Frank Fairfield, Karine Polwart and Martin Carthy and received airplay and praise from the BBC’s Bob Harris, Gideon Coe, Marc Riley and the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe.
